Are you the ?needle in a haystack? bone marrow match that could help save someone?s life?

Rivka Weiser, daughter of Tova and Howard, grew up in West Orange, New Jersey, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and currently lives in New Haven, Connecticut with her spouse Ted, (also an OCP alum,) and nine-month-old baby Rayut. She was recently diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and a world-wide network of bone marrow registries is currently being used to try to find the stem cell / bone marrow transplant match that would greatly help her chances of winning this battle. There is also a young boy in Teaneck, New Jersey ? also in need of a bone marrow transplant.

A previously-scheduled bone marrow registry drive is being held by the Gift of Life Foundation at a shul in West Orange this Tuesday, October 4. More drives are being planned.

Please consider being tested in Israel or in your own community, wherever you live, if you are between 18 and 60 years old and in general good health - it involves just a simple cheek swab! Registering enables you to be included in searches when Rivka and other people like her look for a potentially lifesaving match. Information about the testing can be found on www.giftoflife.org.

Next Wednesday, the Durban III conference will take place in New York. In 2001, the UN hosted the first World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa. The purpose of the conference was to create a forum to address racism, discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance; however, the discussion was centered on Zionism which it linked racism. According to Colin Powell ?the hateful language singled out only one country in the world, Israel, for censure and abuse.? The second World Conference against Racism was held in Geneva April 2009. There, even more controversy arose due to the attendance and speech of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The question remains: why was a notorious anti-Semite and oppressor of human rights ever invited to speak at an anti-racism conference?

The Durban III conference is scheduled for September 21, 2011 in New York City. Though Durban I and Durban II only succeeded in advancing racism, bigotry, and anti-Semitism, the UN has planned a third anti-racism conference in commemoration of the previous two. Canada, Israel, and the US have already boycotted the upcoming conference.

The Penn Israel Sector, along with other groups in Hillel, has decided to be proactive and express Israel's voice on our campus during this critical time. Israel will face serious international criticism and anti-Semitic opinions will be voiced. We must make a stand. We have made t-shirts (see the attached picture) for students to wear on the day of the conference to help us make a unified statement. Along with wearing the t-shirts, we will try to open up discussion around campus about Durban III and the issues it poses. It is important for us as a community to respond to the anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiments of Durban III in a unified way. We simply cannot let this problem go unnoticed at Penn.

If you would like to take part in our campus response to Durban III, please fill out this google form: http://tinyurl.com/63nleeq. In order to be informed enough to open up the conversation on campus, students are encouraged to attend one of our two educational sessions at TIME1 or TIME2. This is an important moment for Israel and the Jewish community and every voice counts.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

    Todah Rabah,

Students committed to taking a stand

Reciting mourner's kaddish for a parent stands at the heart of the Jewish bereavement experience. While traditionally this public recitation has been seen as a son's responsibility, a daughter reciting kaddish is not a modern concept. The halakhic literature addresses questions such as: May a daughter recite mourner's kaddish? May she recite kaddish alone or must it be in conjunction with a man? Should her kaddish be said aloud or quietly?

Rahel Berkovits lectures in Mishnah, Talmud and halakhah at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. She has published entries in the CD-ROM, Jewish Women: A Comprehensive Historical Encyclopedia and lectures widely in both Israel and the United States on topics concerning women and Jewish law.
